Luanda - Two thousand members of the National Police (PN) will ensure Sunday (December 31), the security of the 67th edition of the “São Silvestre de Luanda” traditional end-of-year pedestrian race.
The head of race assurance, Chief Superintendent Simão Saul, who provided the information at a press conference held today, Saturday, said that public order agents, traffic regulators and Civil Protection and Fire Services will be involved.
The officer also informed that the group will be divided into nine sections of the route, all equipped with technical means to make the race successful.
It was also announced at the same meeting with journalists that 21 foreign long-distance runners were registered for this 10-kilometer race, with a starting gun at 6 pm in Largo da Mutamba (Luanda city downtown).
Of these competitors, seven were introduced today morning at the headquarters of the Angolan Athletics Federation, namely Helena Johannes, Daniel Paulus (Namibia), Abraham Baraki (Ethiopia), Rutendo Myahora and Moses Tarakinyu (Zimbabwe).
Mozambicans Rita Francisco, Laissa Manuel and Nazereno Domingos were also at the venue, and athletes from Mauritius, Somalia and Gambia are due to arrive tonight in the Angolan capital.
The Kenyan delegation, which includes the winner of the last edition Olekei Raphael, are expected on Sunday, according to the president of the Angolan Athletics Federation, Bernardo João.
The race will have the participation of 2,500 distance runners, including professionals and amateurs.
António Teko (runner-up in men's) and Ernestina Paulino (winner in women's) of the 2022 edition, stand out among the Angolans.
The race will pass through Amílcar Cabral, Revolução de Outubro and Ho-Chi-Minh Avenues, Alamedas Manuel Van-Dúnem, Largo do Kinaxixi, Mission Streets, Cirilo da Conceição, 4 de Fevereiro, Baleizão Square, Francisco das Necessidades Street, ending at the Coqueiros Stadium. JAD/FN/DOJ
