Luanda - Angolan boxer Pedro Gomes lost Monday in the city of Milan, Italy, to China's Lyu Ping, in the 57kg category, in the Pre-Olympic Tournament qualifier for the Olympic Games, set to take place in Paris, France.

In the five-round fight, Pedro Gomes, also known as Black Panther, won 2 points and was unable to beat the Asian boxer who won 3 points, according to the judges' decision.

In previous fights, the son of the former boxer with the same name (Pedro Gomes), defeated Canadian Victor Tremblay, as well as Zing Liu, representing Hong Kong.

To reach the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, he would have to win the last two challenges of the event.

The 57kg category is being disputed by 52 boxers who are fighting to reach the final round.

From 26 May to 4 June, the second world qualifying window for the Paris Olympics is scheduled to take place in Bangkok, Thailand.

Angola was absent in the first African qualifying window which was held in Dakar, Senegal.

The Angolan boxer was present at the 2022 edition of the London Olympics with boxer Ntumba Silva, but was defeated without competing for failing to weigh in.

Angola was first represented at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow by boxers João de Almeida, Abílio Cabral and Alberto Coelho.
