Huambo - The Global Environment Fund (GEF) this year will provide USD7 million for execution of two sustainable land management projects in Angola, ANGOP learnt Tuesday.
The projects are "Sustainable Land Management in the Central Region of Angola" and "Integration of Climate Change in Environmental Management and Sustainable Land Use.
Both were launched today by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Environment, Jomo Francisco Fortunato, who is on a three-day working visit to Huambo province.
With a timeframe of four years, the projects will be carried out by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Environment in partnership with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
The project for Sustainable Land Management in the Central Region of Angola, to be implemented in the provinces of Huambo and Benguela, with technical support from the Tropical Ecology and Climate Change Centre (CETAC), plans to invest USD 2.6 million.
Once concluded, it will benefit 1,500 people directly and over 1.5 million indirectly, via actions to regenerate 14,000 hectares of land, draw up 10 sustainable land management plans and train 100 public officials to mobilise resources.
The "Integrating Climate Change into Environmental Management and Sustainable Land Use" project, to be implemented in Cabinda, Cuando Cubango, Huambo and Namibe provinces, is based on promoting sustainable land management practices in the four agri-ecological centres implemented in these regions of the country.
