Dubai - Expo City Dubai, the venue for COP 28 as from Thursday, is deemed a city centred on the future and it is located in the south of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), being also the site of Expo2020, the first world exhibition held outside Europe and North America.

Expo City, which opened on the first day of October 2022, retains many of the traits that delighted visitors at the world expo, including Al Wasl Plaza, the Garden in the Sky observation tower and the famous Surreal water feature.

Angola is taking part in the event with a large delegation led by the minister for the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho.

In addition to the delegates, the summit will bring together tens of thousands of participants, including heads of state and government or their representatives, private companies and civil society organisations.

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is the main objective of the United Nations (UN) meetings, where the discussion on adapting to climate change is also gaining ground.

The 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP (Conference of the Parties) 28, begins this Thursday in Dubai, UAE, and ends on 12 December.

At COP 21 in Paris in December 2015, the Paris Agreement emerged, in which almost all the world's countries committed themselves to limiting the increase in the average global temperature to two degrees Celsius (2ºC) above pre-industrial values, and preferably no more than 1.5ºC.

The agreement foresees a mechanism to compensate emission in the carbon market, as well as provide for each country to present its contributions to lowering emissions.

For this edition of the COP, UAE businessman and industry minister Sultan Al Jaber has been appointed conference chairman.

Access to the event is done through the Dubai Metro. The venue is over 4,000 square kilometres and the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC), which hosts various world summits, conferences and music concerts, is located on the same site.

The main themed pavilions remain, namely the Mobility, Earth and Sustainability pavilion, which focuses on educational and interactive experiences, while the Opportunity pavilion has been transformed into the Expo Dubai 2020 Museum.
