Ondjiva - The Lutheran World Federation is currently raising awareness and providing environmental education to several rural communities of the Southern Cunene Province, namely Cahama, Ombadja, Cuvelai, Cuanhama and Namacunde, the project coordinator, Benny Fulayi, told ANGOP Tuesday.
Benny Fulayi said the programme, to be developed in ten months, aims at raising awareness on good practices of sanitation and environment.
Launched in November, the project is part of the environment and climate change resilience training component funded by the German Evangelical Church.
Included in the Project to Support Resilience for Mitigating the Effects of Drought, the programme is co-financed by FRESAN and the involvement of traditional authorities.
With an overall value of 460 000 euros, the "bread with the world" funding is directed to projects linked to water, agriculture, business, environmental training and resilience to climate change and literacy.
Benny Fulayi underlined that as regards basic sanitation and hygiene, the population has been trained on techniques to build latrines with local materials to gain experience and reduce open-air defecation.
The beneficiaries of the project, Fulayi said, will learn good practices for promoting campaigns to maintain hygiene at water points (cisterns, fountains, wells and water tubes) in rural areas.
On the environment protection side, environmental education sessions will be promoted to improve forest management and the replacement of devastated plants.
The Lutheran World Federation project coordinator said the aim is to encourage people to plant trees in their backyards and aid them to reduce deforestation.
