Luanda - An Angolan delegation, headed by the Secretary of State for Environment, Paula Coelho, participates from 22 to 23 of this month, in Nairobi (Kenya), in the 5th United Nations Environment Assembly - UNEA-5, which will take place in a videoconference format.

According to a press release issued by the Angolan diplomatic representation in the East African country, arriving this Saturday to ANGOP, the delegation also includes the ambassador and permanent representative of Angola at the UN offices, Sianga Abílio.

The event, which brings together senior officials of the environment sector of all UN member countries, takes place under the slogan "Strengthening the actions of nature for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals" and aims to analyse and discuss environmental issues, in search of innovative and sustainable solutions to solve the environmental crises that the world has been experiencing in recent times.

Given the constraints imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the 5th United Nations Environment Assembly - UNEA-5 should be held in two sessions with different dates, being the first for the 22nd and 23rd of the current month focused on the discussion and approval of functional issues of the United Nations Environment Programme, namely, its Medium Term Strategy (2022-2025), its Work Plan and Budget for the biennium 2022-2023, in addition to the exact date of the second session, scheduled later this month in a person format.

The first session of UNEA-5 will also proceed to elect the President of the next United Nations Environment Assembly-UNEA-6 who, according to the rotation rules and procedures of the Assembly, should be a representative of the African region.

On the sidelines of UNEA-5, a high-level Leadership Dialogue will be held on the theme "Contributions of the environmental dimension of sustainable development to resilient and inclusive building of a post-pandemic world", a platform for Member States to comment on work underway or undertaken in their countries to mitigate the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
