Luanda - The Angolan government has said it is implementing measures to mitigate the impact of greenhouse gases, based on reduction of fossil fuel burning and methane emissions, the national director for environment, Sandra Nascimento, said Monday in Luanda.

According to the director, the measures include the use of renewable energies, wind power and solar panels, mass planting and reforestation campaigns, recycling and waste recovery.

Speaking to ANGOP about the policies to preserve the environment, the official spoke about the legislation on environmental protection and preservation, the exploitation of natural resources, pollution, and waste, the loss of biodiversity, deforestation, fires, poaching, soil erosion and desertification.

The director reiterated the government’s commitment to implement the National Climate Change Strategy (ENAC 2022-2035), as part of the country's contribution to a healthy global environment.

This strategy is based on pillars that contribute to low-carbon electricity production and access in rural areas, regulation of the electricity sector, low-carbon transport and agriculture, energy efficiency, waste management and forestry, among others.

Sandra Nascimento said the government has the National Development Plan and the National Sanitation and Environmental Quality Programs and that these plans aim to improve people's living conditions, through strategic actions relating to climate change, biodiversity and new technologies.

The official underlined that the rate of import and replacement of refrigeration gases is progressing well, in accordance with the schedule for the progressive elimination of this substance, established by the Montreal Protocol for its total elimination by 2030.

Nascimento explained that these gases belong to the family of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which are less environmentally friendly and destroy the ozone layer. SJ/OHA/TED/AMP
