Sumbe - Zimbabwe's ambassador to Angola, Thando Madzvamuse, expressed on Thursday, in Sumbe, centre-west Cuanza-Sul Province, his intention to cooperate with local authorities in the field of agriculture.

The diplomat, who was speaking to the press after an audience with the governor of Cuanza-Sul, Mara Quiosa, said that the agricultural sector constitutes an important area in which the two countries can cooperate, taking into account the need to diversify Angola's economy and guarantee food security.

He assured that Zimbabwe has great potential in cereal cultivation and intends to share its experience with Angola and, in particular, with the Province of Cuanza-Sul.

“The province has a record of good rains and together we can work to develop the region in the agricultural sector”, he stressed.

The diplomat promised to attract investors to Cuanza-Sul, also in the area of tourism.

He suggested that the points covered would be re-evaluated within 12 months.

The province has a total area of 2,817,504 hectares of arable land for farming, with only 1,125,564 hectares being used, with 938,751 hectares unused (idle land).

The main products include corn, beans, sweet potatoes, reindeer potatoes, cassava, tomatoes, cabbage, bananas, citrus fruits and coffee.

According to stats from the local Agriculture and Fisheries Office, in the 2022/2023 agricultural campaign, they obtained a gross production of 3.5 million tons, of which 762,419 tons of cereals, 1,270,286 tons of roots and tubers, 107,702 tons of legumes and oilseeds, 193,357 tons of vegetables and 996,714 tons of fruit.
