Mungo – More than 123k tons of several products, mainly cereals, tubers and vegetables, are to be achieved in the municipality of Mungo, Huambo province, in the current 2023/2024 agricultural campaign, ANGOP learned on Friday.

The information was presented by the head of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries in the municipality of Mungo, João Baptista Kaquarta, remembering that peasant families and cooperatives produced, in the previous season, close to 100 thousand tons of various agricultural products.

For this year, he said, a harvest of 123 thousand tons is expected, in production in an area of 14k 182.45 hectares of arable land, involving 153k peasant families.

João Baptista informed that for the success of this agricultural campaign, more than 184 tons of fertilizers were distributed to peasant families and to the 35 cooperatives, supported by 192 field schools.

He said that in order to expand cultivation areas, the Agrarian Development Support Fund (FADA) delivered four tractors and their respective implements to an equal number of cooperatives, in an initiative that aims to guarantee food security for the population of the municipality of Mungo, in the Northern corridors of the province of Huambo.

Coffee production

In terms of promoting coffee production, more than 176k seedlings were distributed to peasant families and farmers, as part of the repopulation and revitalization program for this crop in the Central Plateau (Huambo).

He mentioned that the municipality gained, in 2023, an Arabica coffee production greenhouse, with the capacity to produce 500k seedlings/year, in an initiative by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

He highlighted that the ship, installed on the banks of the Lovulo river, at the entrance to the municipal town, in an area of one and a half hectares, will also support producers in the municipalities of Bailundo and Londuimbali, to encourage the quality production of coffee.

João Baptista Kaquarta assured that the municipality is registering an encouraging growth in coffee production, by peasant families, who are already selling the product, with a kilogram costing 500 Kz (US$ 0,60), without the need to go to informal markets.

He highlighted that locally produced coffee has, in recent times, a large market, as consumers seek out producers in their homes, where they sell coffee, whether Arabica or Mabuba, while commercial coffee is sold for a thousand Kwanzas (US$ 1,2), which will provide financial support to peasant families.

Likewise, he informed that the locality has 105 coffee producers and that they remain expectant to follow through on this challenge from the Angolan Executive.

The municipality of Mungo, whose headquarters are located 130 kilometers north of the city of Huambo, has 120 peasant associations, 192 field schools and 35 agricultural cooperatives, in a universe of 70k peasant families, with an area of 13k hectares of arable land.

A total of 153.629 people live in the municipality of Mungo, one of the 11 that make up the province of Huambo, mostly peasants, distributed across the communes of Cambuengo and Sede, according to recent data from the National Statistics Institute (INE). JSV/ALH/CF/DOJ
