Uíge – At least 89.000 Arabica coffee seedlings were distributed Thursday in Uíge province to producers in the region, in a bid to encourage the production of this crop.

Speaking to ANGOP during the free distribution of coffee seedlings, the head of the local department of the National Coffee Institute (INCA), Miguel Camoxi, said last year 200,000 seedlings were distributed.

He explained that the expectation for this year was to deliver more coffee seedlings, however due to the reduction in rainfall some seedlings dried up.

‘We depend on the rains, even though we've already requested for a water supply this season,’ he lamented.

Miguel Camoxi said the municipalities of Uíge, Negage, Quitexe, Mucaba, Bungo, Buengas and Quimbele are the ones that produce the most coffee in the region and that the poor state of access roads, lack of means of transport and financing are the main difficulties faced by producers.

Coffee producers highlight measures to increase production

Coffee producers in Uíge province have praised the free delivery of coffee seedlings, which they consider important to increase production of the ‘red berry’, as well as recovering the mystique of the production growth in the region. JAR/DAN/AMP
