Saurimo - The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is to make 132 million US dollars available for the promotion of agriculture practiced by women in Angola’s Lunda-Sul province.
The information was disclosed by the director of IFAD's South and East Africa Division, Custódio Mucavele, after an audience with Lunda-Sul governor, Daniel Neto.
Custódio Mucavele, who disclosed no dates for the start of the funding, said the program includes training for farmers and the acquisition of inputs, adding that before the project is implemented, IFAD technicians will work in the province to identify agricultural potential and define priorities.
The local governor Daniel Neto on his turn reiterated that attracting investors to develop agriculture in the region is one of the local government's priorities.
Lunda-Sul expects to harvest 510,000 tonnes of various products in the current agricultural season, compared to 300,000 in the previous season.
This season at least 54,914 farming families are involved and 82,372 hectares of prepared land have been made available.
The International Fund for Agricultural Development is a UN agency based in Rome and works where poverty and hunger are deepest, in the most remote regions of developing countries and situations of fragility, where few development agencies or international financial institutions operate.
