Benguela - Cooperatives in Benguela province are this year to receive support worth USD 1 million, as part of the Agro-PRODESI programme, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) representative in Angola, Gherda Barreto said Friday.
The head of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Office in the country has been assessing, since today in Benguela, the implementation of Agro-PRODESI, namely in the promotion of the main agri-food value chains, such as vegetables and fruits.
Speaking to the press, the FAO representative said that this financial support resulted from the partnership with the government under the Agro-PRODESI project and will benefit women and young agro-entrepreneurs cooperatives, to develop the priority value chains in Benguela.
According to the official, the amount of USD 1 million will be made available this year to follow up on support for the 48 cooperatives being set up in the province, in terms of programmes such as Agro-PRODESI, implemented since 2021, and field schools.
Therefore, it defends the need for strategic dialogue with the main stakeholders of the value chains of the agri-food system, with a view to attracting investment in the agricultural sector, taking into account the transformation and processing of priority products.
